This august panel will talk about key tech trends for 2012 and how their agencies will put new technology to work for the business of government. And, we’ll talk about where industry fits in the mix as the revolution continues.

Mr. Darren B. Ash is the Deputy Executive Director for Corporate Management in the Executive Director's Office of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Mr. Ash provides policy direction, leadership and oversight for information technology (IT), information management, information systems security, space planning and facilities management, rulemaking, acquisition management, and centralized administrative service activities at the NRC. He also serves as the Agency’s Chief Information Officer, Chief Freedom of Information Act Officer, and Senior Accountable Official for Data Quality.

Roger W. Baker was nominated by President Obama to serve as the Assistant Secretary for Information and Technology for the Department of Veterans Affairs and subsequently confirmed by the Senate on May 18, 2009. As Assistant Secretary, Mr. Baker serves as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Department, directly managing an organization of over 7,500 information technology (IT) professionals and a budget of over $3.3 billion.

Kathy Conrad Principal Deputy Associate Administrator, OCSIT, GSA |
Kathy Conrad is a proven leader, problem-solver and strategic advisor with nearly thirty years of experience in government technology programs and policies. She joined the GSA Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies (OCSIT) as Principal Deputy Associate Administrator in May 2011. Ms. Conrad is the primary advisor to the OCSIT Associate Administrator on citizen services/engagement and innovative technology programs and strategic direction. She oversees OCSIT program management, including policy development, oversight and implementation of OCSIT operations and stakeholder outreach. Initially, she is focusing on high priority OCSIT areas, including open government, mobile technology and cloud computing.

Michael Howell Deputy Program Manager, ISE, DNI |
On December 6, 2010, Mr. Michael Howell became the Deputy Program Manager of the Office of the Program Manager for the Information Sharing Environment (PM-ISE). The Program Manager has government-wide authority to plan, oversee the build-out, and manage use of the ISE to implement the President’s terrorism-related information sharing priorities. Mr. Howell’s work focuses on assisting the Program Manager in the development of policies, procedures, guidelines, rules and standards to foster the development and proper operation of the ISE while assisting, monitoring, and assessing implementation of the ISE by departments and agencies.

Richard Spires CIO, DHS |
Richard A. Spires was appointed in September 2009 to serve as the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Chief Information Officer (CIO). In this capacity, Mr. Spires is responsible for the department’s $6.4 billion investment in Information Technology (IT). He leads and facilitates the development, implementation, and maintenance of the department’s IT architecture. Mr. Spires is the chairman of the DHS Chief Information Officer Council and the Enterprise Architecture Board. He strongly supports the Secretary’s goal of unifying and maturing DHS–one DHS, one enterprise, a shared vision, with integrated results-based operations. Mr. Spires also serves as vice chairman of the Federal CIO Council, and co-chairs the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative.

Simon Szykman CIO, DOC |
Dr. Simon Szykman was named Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the Department of Commerce in May 2010. As the Department’s CIO, Dr. Szykman is responsible for providing leadership, establishing policy, and maintaining oversight for the information technology investments that support the diverse portfolio of programs across the Commerce Department’s dozen bureaus. Dr. Szykman most recently served over three years as the CIO of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology, where he began his professional career as part of the agency’s technical staff.
