Speaker Biography
For our May luncheon, AFFIRM will join with Government Computer News to applaud 10 outstanding technology leaders whose innovation, courage and leadership in government IT have earned each of them the distinguished 2008 GCN Technology Leadership Award. Wyatt Kash, editor-in-chief of Government Computer News, will moderate the discussion.
You’ll meet all 10 winners, and hear from four of these innovators how each succeeded in advancing important IT initiatives at their agencies.
The speakers at our May luncheon will talk about what worked and the lessons learned:
- Building an Enterprise Data Warehouse for the USPS capable of helping 40,000 users run 1.5 million reports a month against 42 TB of data – with average response times of less than three minutes per inquiry.
- Completing one of the first fully adopted applications of ITIL framework (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) for a federal agency, making dramatic improvements in a DISA Joint Staff Support Center.
- Rolling out the government’s smart card credentialing program for GSA, after helping develop the Defense Department’s Common Access Card program which has issued more than 11 million cards.)
- Overcoming the lack of reliable networks in third world countries, using Service Oriented Architecture and other automation tools, to gather and analyze vital reports for Peace Corps officials.
About the GCN Technology Leadership Awards:
This year’s winners were selected from dozens of candidates who were nominated by colleagues, co-workers and, in some cases, superiors. Their names will be formally announced at the AFFIRM Luncheon May 15 and profiles about their work will appear in the May 19, 2008 print edition of GCN magazine and online at GCN.com.
The year’s winners include top IT leaders from:
- DARPA
- Defense Information Systems Agency
- Department of the Navy
- General Services Administration
- Peace Corps
- U.S. Postal Service
- U.S. Patent and Trade Office
- U.S. Small Business Administration
The GCN Technology Leadership Awards are based on a candidate’s record for:
- Exceptional accomplishments over a substantial period of time in leading government information technology initiatives;
- The ability to inspire co-workers to higher achievement; and
- The degree to which candidates demonstrated innovative approaches, and a penchant for taking risks, in tackling mission-related projects.
