Michael F. Brown has been the Director, Office of Information Systems Security (ISS), at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) since April of 2001. Prior to assuming the duties of the Director, Brown was the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Army National Guard from October 1999 through April 2001.
On May 31, 2001, Brown retired at the rank of Colonel from the Army with 32 years of total service. While on Active Duty, he held several key positions within the Army prior to his assignment as the CIO. While at Fort Gordon, he served as the Senior Advisor to the Office Chief of Signal. In his assignment to the ICorps G-6 office at Fort Lewis, Wash., he became the Mobile Subscriber Equipment fielding officer for the Corps. He was also charged with supervising the Communication Plans and COMSEC offices, which managed Joint deployments to Korea and Europe. As the Director of the Army's Information Assurance Office, Brown formulated the Information Assurance Programs for the Active Army, the National Guard, and the United States Army Reserve. He has developed the defense in depth strategy to improve the security posture of Army installations as well as tactical units. Additionally, he was charged with the vulnerability analysis of all RDA programs and weapons systems that supported the First Digitized Force. He was also responsible for formulating and implementing the Army's Public Key Infrastructure.
Brown's awards include the Legion of Merit (2), Meritorious Service Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (2), Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Staff Badge, and the Order of Mercury Award. In 1999, he was recognized as one of the top 100 Federal employees.
Brown is a native of Niagara Falls, N.Y. He received his Bachelor of
Science in education from the State University of New York at Geneseo,
his Master of Education from the University of Pennsylvania at
Bloomsburg and his public school administrative degree from Bucknell
University.
